How linear-foot cabinet pricing works

The industry standard is to quote cabinets by the linear foot — one foot of cabinet run measured along the wall. Base cabinets, wall cabinets, and tall cabinets are each priced separately, then added together. This lets you give a client a quick budget number before you've designed the layout in detail.

The quick estimator above takes your linear footage and several spec choices, then returns a low-to-high range based on national benchmarks. It's a starting point, not a final bid.

What drives cabinet cost

Six factors move the price per linear foot more than anything else:

Box construction — frameless (European-style) boxes cost more to build but offer full access; face-frame boxes use less material but require more labor in finishing.

Box material — plywood boxes hold screws better and resist moisture; MDF and particleboard are cheaper but heavier and less durable.

Door style and wood species — a slab door in paint-grade MDF is the floor; a raised-panel door in walnut is the ceiling. Cherry, maple, and oak sit in between.

Hardware tier — builder-grade hinges and slides add $5–$15 per cabinet; premium soft-close undermount slides and concealed hinges add $30–$80 per cabinet.

Finish — paint requires primer, multiple coats, and sanding between; conversion varnish is the most durable and most expensive; stain is the most forgiving.

Region — labor and material costs in a major metro market run 20–40% higher than rural areas in the same state.

Benchmark ranges by cabinet tier

These are retail-installed ranges for a full kitchen (cabinets only, no countertops or appliances):

Stock cabinets — $150–$250 per linear foot. Pre-built in standard sizes, limited finish options, fastest lead time.

Semi-custom cabinets — $300–$500 per linear foot. Factory-built to order in a wider range of sizes and finishes, 4–8 week lead time.

Full custom cabinets — $500–$1,200 per linear foot. Built entirely to spec in a local shop, unlimited design options, 8–16 week lead time.
